Lectures held at St Andrew's are organised by the St Andrew’s Trust for the Study of Religion and Society
The bass trombone is a relatively unknown solo instrument, often relegated to the back row of ensembles. This recital reveals what transpires when you pair a bass trombonist with an internationally celebrated concert pianist. What are the sonic possibilities of such a collaboration and why on earth would Jian Liu agree to perform with a brute from the back row?! The programme will take the listener on a journey from Schumann and Shostakovich to the end of the 20th century with two enthralling works (Sarcich and Schnyder) showcasing the virtuosity and artistry of NZSO’s Bass Trombonist, Shannon Pittaway and NZSM’s Senior Lecturer in Piano, Jian Liu.
