MODERATOR
This day, in this place, God calls a people to be the Church.
Amid unique needs, singular challenges, and unrepeatable days,
God reforms and recreates us.
Amid shifting shapes, and moving boundaries,
God calls a people once again, to be one in Christ.
Within this people there are those who are called to break bread,
and to baptize the children of God.
They are appointed to preach the Word,
and to look for the signs of God’s coming reign.
They are to encourage participation in God’s mission.
They are to be leaders.
They are to be servants.
They are to play their part in God’s body,
as if God was their very life – as God most surely is.
Ministers of Word and Sacrament are part of God’s care
for the life of the Church.
That is why we have seen fit
to ensure that this Church has a Minister in its midst.
I call upon Rev Reg Weeks, the Convenor of the Ministry Settlement Board, to tell us how Fei came to be appointed as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in this place and among this people.
NARRATIVE
(Rev Reg Weeks explains the process that has led to the call to
Rev Dr Fei Taule’ale’ausumai)
THE ACT OF FAITH
Rev Stuart Simpson, acting for the Executive Secretary of Presbytery
This Induction, within the community of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, is an act of Christian faith. Our Church believes, and requires each of its Ministers to believe in the Word of God in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and the fundamental doctrines of Christian Faith contained in Te Kupu Whakapono and Commentary, the Westminster Confession of Faith, and other subordinate standards of this Church. We accept that liberty of conviction is recognised in this Church but only on such points as do not enter into the fundamental doctrines of Christian faith contained in the Scriptures and subordinate standards. All ministers acknowledge the Presbyterian government of this Church to be agreeable to the Word of God and promise to submit to it and promise to observe the order and administration of public worship as allowed in this Church.
Moderator
Let us proclaim the faith we have received and share with all Christians by standing and affirming our faith.
(Please stand)
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH TE KUPU WHAKAPONO
From this land of Aotearoa New Zealand
we confess that we believe in and belong to
the one true and living God,
who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Love before all love.
We believe in God the Father, sovereign and holy,
Creator and nurturer of all, Father of Jesus Christ,
sender of the Holy Spirit, and Judge of all the earth.
We believe in God the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,
truly human and truly divine,
who lived among us full of grace and truth.
For our sin he was crucified
and by the power of God was raised from death,
forgiving us, setting us free
and bringing to birth God’s new creation.
Now ascended, he calls us to repentance and faith
and restores us to God and to one another.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
the giver of life at work in all creation,
who inspired the Scriptures and makes Christ known,
who transforms hearts and minds
and gathers us into the community of Christ,
empowering the Church in worship and in mission.
We belong to this triune God,
women and men,
young and old,
from many nations,
in Christ he iwi kotahi tatou, [we are one people]
witnesses to God’s love in word and action,
servants of reconciliation,
and stewards of creation.
As God’s people, we look forward in hope and joy
to the return of Christ,
to the new heaven and earth,
where evil and death will be no more,
justice and peace will flourish,
and we shall forever delight in the glory of God.
(Please be seated)
THE VOWS
Moderator
In this act,
the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand
acts and speaks within the one, holy,
catholic and apostolic Church, which is represented
in the Creed we have just affirmed together.
The Ministry of Word and Sacrament
is an apostolic ministry.
Through it the Church is reminded and encouraged
to fulfil its calling in Jesus Christ.
He is the One upon whom you will rely;
He is the One whom you will serve;
He is the one whom you will proclaim.
Therefore, that we may know
that you desire to receive this ministry of Christ
through the gift of the Holy Spirit,
we ask you to reaffirm your faith.
Minister
I confess Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and believe that I am called by God and the Church to the ministry of Word and Sacrament. I receive the witness of the holy scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the supreme rule of faith and life and undertake to preach from them to make Jesus Christ known. I resolve to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion with the people of God. I accept the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as witnessing to the core faith of the holy catholic Church, and I accept the Westminster documents and Te Kupu Whakapono as our subordinate standards and as a witness to the Reformed tradition of faith. Relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, I commit myself to the study of the Bible, to model my life and ministry on Christ and to be faithful in prayer. I promise to share in the life and work of the Presbytery and the courts of the Church to uphold the doctrine, worship, government and discipline of the Church, and at all times seek its unity and peace. I accept my appointment to be the Minister of St Andrew’s on the Terrace and I intend, with God’s help, to grow into the role of faithful pastor, servant leader, and minister of the Gospel.
Congregation Thanks be to God!
THE FORMULA
(The Rev Dr Fei Taule’ale’ausumai signs the Formula)
SONG Brother, Sister, Let Me Serve You
Words and Music: Richard Gillard
Tune: SERVANT SONG AA8
(During the last verse of the song, Ministers of Presbytery and Ministers of other churches who recognise a common ministry, gather around Fei)
1. Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you.
Pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.
2. We are pilgrims on a journey,
we are travellers on the road.
We are here to help each other
walk the mile, and bear the load.
3. I will hold the Christ-light for you,
in the night-time of your fear.
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.
4. I will weep when you are weeping;
when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you.
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we’ve seen this journey through.
5. When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we’ve known together
of Christ’s love, and agony.
6. Sister, brother, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you.
Pray that I may have the grace
to let you be my servant too.
(Congregation – please be seated)
THE PRAYER OF INDUCTION
Moderator
Almighty God, you have willed that under Christ —
the great shepherd of the sheep — your people are to be fed
and guided by your ministering servants.
We thank you that in Fei
you have provided a pastor for this people.
We ask you to give her the power of your Holy Spirit
that being so filled with wisdom, understanding and insight,
she may discern your will with justice
and boldly proclaim your Word.
Enable her to be a strong, faithful and loving pastor,
that your people may be challenged
by the preaching of the Gospel,
strengthened by the sacraments,
and firmly grounded in a Christian faith and way of life.
We ask this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory, forever and ever. Amen.
THE DECLARATION
The Moderator Declares:
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
the King and Head of the Church,

we offer you our gesture of greeting.
In acknowledging this we sing God’s blessing upon you.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rev Ross Scott
(concluding with Jim Cotter’s Jesus Prayer)
Eternal Spirit – Life-Giver, Pain-Bearer, Love-Maker,
source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all, loving God, in whom is heaven:
the hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever.
Amen.
HYMN God Who Sets Us On A Journey
Words: Joy Dine,
Tune: HYFRYDOL WOV148ii
1. God who sets us on a journey
to discover, dream and grow,
lead us as you led your people
in the desert long ago;
journey inward, journey outward,
stir the spirit, stretch the mind,
love for God and self and neighbour
marks the way that Christ defined.
2. Exploration brings new insights,
changes, choices we must face;
give us wisdom in deciding,
mindful always of your grace;
should we stumble, lose our bearings,
find it hard to know what’s right,
we regain our true direction
focused on the Jesus light.
3. End our longing for the old days,
grant the vision that we lack –
once we’ve started on this journey
there can be no turning back;
let us travel light, discarding
excess baggage from our past,
cherish only what’s essential,
choosing treasure that will last.
4. When we set up camp and settle
to avoid love’s risk and pain,
you disturb complacent comfort,
pull the tent pegs up again;
keep us travelling in the knowledge
you are always at our side;
give us courage for the journey,
Christ our goal and Christ our guide.
(Please be seated)
