PROCESSIONAL HYMN                                                              ‘For all the saints’

Words: ©2018 Susan Jones               Music: WOV 384 Sine Nomine by Ralph Vaughan Williams

For all the saints of every age and day,
who bravely seek to follow the right way;
sharing Good News by what they do and say:
Alleluia!  Alleluia!

For those who wrestled with ideas and faith

listened, discussed, sense of it all to make,

risking exclusion, dislocation, hate

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

For those who knew a better way to be,

who stood and argued so that all could see

that all were needed for equality

Alleluia, Alleluia

For Jesus who exploded people’s view,

of who was ‘out’ or ‘in’ the chosen few

who died for freedom out of love for you,

Alleluia, Alleluia.

And so we meet to celebrate the brave

standing for good, who with compassion gave

their lives for truth, a Better Way to pave

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

WELCOME

HYMN                                                  WOV 551  ‘I sing a song of the saints of God’

Words by Lesbia Scott (1929)

Music: Grand Isle by John H Hopkins Jnr

I sing a song of the saints of God,
patient and brave and true,
who toiled and fought and lived and died
for the One they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,
and one was a shepherdess on the green:
they were all of them saints of God, and I mean,
God helping, to be one too.

They loved their Leader so good and dear,
and God’s love made them strong;
and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake,
the whole of their good lives long.
And one was a soldier, and one was a priest,
and one was slain by a fierce wild beast:
and there’s not any reason, no, not the least,
why I shouldn’t be one too.

They lived not only in ages past;
there are hundreds of thousands still;
the world is bright with the joyous saints
who love to do Jesus’ will.
You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea,
in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;
for the saints of God are just folk like me,
and I mean to be one too

BLESSING THE CHILDREN        (All stand)

We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together.

We bless you. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE

Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying, “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.”  Or, simply saying ‘Hello” is a good idea.  Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!

And blessèd are the ones we overlook;

The faithful servers on the coffee rota,

The ones who hold no candle, bell or book

But keep the books and tally up the quota,

The gentle souls who come to ‘do the flowers’,

The quiet ones who organise the fete,

Church sitters who give up their weekday hours,

Doorkeepers who may open heaven’s gate.

God knows the depths that often go unspoken

Amongst the shy, the quiet, and the kind,

Or the slow healing of a heart long broken

Placing each flower so for a year’s mind.

Invisible on earth, without a voice,

In heaven their angels glory and rejoice.

RESPONSE

For the Word in scripture,

for the Word among us,

for the Word within us,

we give thanks

HYMN                                                  FFS 50 ‘Nothing is lost on the breath of God.’

Words & Music by Colin Gibson

Words & Music © 1996 Hope Publishing Co.

Nothing is lost on the breath of God,
nothing is lost for ever;
God’s breath is love, and that love will remain,
holding the world for ever.
No feather too light, no hair too fine,
no flower too brief in its glory;
no drop in the ocean, no dust in the air,
but is counted and told in God’s story.

Nothing is lost to the eyes of God,
nothing is lost for ever;
God sees with love and that love will remain,
holding the world for ever.
No journey too far, no distance too great,
no valley of darkness too blinding;
no creature too humble, no child too small
for God to be seeking, and finding.

Nothing is lost to the heart of God,
nothing is lost for ever;
God’s heart is love, and that love will remain,
holding the world for ever.
No impulse of love, no office of care,
no moment of life in its fulness;
no beginning too late, no ending too soon,
but is gathered and known in God’s goodness.

OFFERING PRAYER (said together)

Following those who came here before us, we bring these gifts,

   brought as they brought them over many years;

Tithes and offerings,

   the expected and the extra;

Donations and gifts, food and money given with gratitude,

   asking they be blessed and therefore fruitful

   in their mission to this place and the world.

So may it be,

   AMEN

We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing

their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.

CIRCLE OF PRAYER

We think today of the people of  Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.   In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name David Clark (Dunedin North electorate) and Tamati Coffee (Waiariki electorate).  Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the teachers and students of Queen Margaret College.

HYMN                                                                                                 A safe stronghold

                                                             Words © 2017 Susan Jones after the hymn by Martin Luther

Music WOV 8 Ein’ Feste Burg by Martin Luther

A safe stronghold we may seek still

Secure and safe, a loving embrace;

We look in different places, will

Career and fam’ly take God’s place?

We seek a grounded life

an anchor in the strife

a centre point of calm

hurts healed by holy balm;

Warm welcome at the gate to home.

We unwrap layers from ourselves

the baggage, stress and woundings

to find the Self which lives within

where we can make deep soundings;

we find compassion, light,

creative, sweet delight

the heart which helps us thrive

where routine comes alive

A stronghold sure, in our deepest soul.

The energy we draw from there

lights beacons which flame living hope

and fuels for all a warm, bright care

pushing back dark so all can cope;

Then justice flows free too

Compassion flowers anew

For everyone is free

Loved always, you and me

Our common wealth undisputed.
