WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

JESUS DARED TO LIVE GOD’S WAY IN THE MIDST OF ALL THE ‘UPS’ AND ‘DOWNS’ OF LIFE. WE TOO ARE CALLED TO PROCLAIM OUR FAITH FAITHFULLY BY THE WAY WE LIVE AND TREAT ONE ANOTHER.

FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION BEFORE THE SERVICE Jesus’ self-understanding did not include thinking and speaking of himself as the Son of God whose historical intention was to die for the sins of the world, and his message was not about believing in him. Rather he was a spirit person, subversive sage, social prophet, and movement founder who invited his followers and hearers into a transforming relationship with the same Spirit he himself knew, and into a community whose social vision was shaped by the core value of compassion. (Marcus Borg)

GATHERING
The journey into freedom is a choice we make.
It is choosing to follow Jesus
along passages of emptiness
and pathways of fullness,
through the valley of fear
and along roadways of our faith,
gathering around us love
for our safe travelling.
Let us celebrate life in the presence we name God.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN
Give joyful praise and honour
Words: adapted by Bill Wallace © 2011 World Library Publications
Music: WOV 250 St Theodulph
Give joyful praise and honour to Christ who sets us free to work for peace and healing and help the blind to see.
1. You came upon a donkey
a sign of glorious peace;
You came to break oppression
and signs of hope increase. Give joyful praise…
2. Whenever prophets challenge
injustice, lies and wrong;
or dare expose the weakness
of those whose power seems strong. Give joyful praise…
3. There shall be crucifixion
of those who dare to speak.
But some will then awaken
from acquiescent sleep. Give joyful praise…
4. You come to fire our spirits
with dreams that shall come true
through laughter, love and labour
with others and with you. Give joyful praise…

PRAYER
PRAYER
Let there be joy in our coming together this morning.
Let there be compassion heard in the words we speak,
and love in the songs we sing.
Let there be silence for the voice within us and beyond us.
Let there be joy in our coming together.
May we awaken to the presence of God
Here in this ordinary place.
May we awaken to the power of love,
Here in this ordinary crowd
May we build a community of justice for all
Now in this ordinary time
May we daily work to build a world at peace
Now with these ordinary hands

come and follow my leader,
Jesus Christ is riding by,
come and follow my leader.
All the people shout his name,
waving branches, sing his fame,
throw their coats upon the road,
glad to praise the Son of God -

SILENCE
Prayer
Let us retrace the steps of Jesus to Calvary. . . . . . . .
We come to the Upper Room
And confess that we miss the point
We come to Gethsemane
And confess the rejection of your will
We come to Caiaphas’ house
And confess our distortion of the truth
We come to Pilate’s house
And confess our compromise for convenience
We come to Herod’s house
And confess our mockery of Jesus
We come to Golgotha
And confess our wandering from The Way
We come to Calvary
And confess our crucifixion of Christ today.
God have mercy
Christ have mercy
God have mercy

CIRCLE OF PRAYER
CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of El Salvador and Christian World Service Partner Las Dignas, working to open opportunities for women at every level of Salvadoran life - politics, health, economics and education. We hold all refugees in our hearts. We pray in particular for those detained for many years in Papua New Guinea & Nauru. We give thanks for progress that has been made and pray that their calls for justice might yet find a compassionate response. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Simon Watts (North Shore) and Duncan Webb (Christchurch Central). Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of St Paul's Union Church, Pahiatua.
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S
Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity
with all who follow the Way of Jesus
and new bonds of love
with people of other faiths.
Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place
where honest dealing,
good government, the desire for beauty,
and the care for others flourish.
Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,
and what we believe the strong impulse
of our worship and work. Amen

HYMN CH 4 370 ‘Ride on ride on, the time is right’
Words: John L Bell (b. 1949) & Graham Maule (b. 1958)
Words © 1988 WGRG, Iona Community, Glasgow, Scotland, G2 3DH
(Admin. by Willow Publishing Pty. Ltd.)
Tune: Gonfalon Royal WOV 318
1. Ride on, ride on, the time is right:
the roadside crowds scream with delight; palm branches mark the pilgrim way where beggars squat and children play.
2. Ride on, ride on, your critics wait,
intrigue and rumour circulate; new lies abound in word and jest, and trust becomes a suspect guest.
3. Ride on, ride on, while well aware
that those who shout and wave and stare, are mortals who, with common breath, can crave for life and lust for death
4. Ride on, ride on, though blind with tears,
though dumb to speak and deaf to jeers. Your path is clear, though few can tell their garments pave the road to hell.
5. Ride on, ride on, the room is let,
the wine matured, the saw is whet; and dice your death-throes shall attend though faith, not fate, dictates your end.
6. Ride on, ride on, God’s love demands.
Justice and peace lie in your hands. Evil and angels’ voices rhyme: this is the man and this the time.
