WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE
GATHERING
We gather after a hundred years of education;
light-bearing and truth telling,
preparing girls for the world they face.
We gather after millennia of faith;
light bearing and truth fulfilling, preparing people for the world they face.
This Pentecost we bring light and truth together with passionate fire;
We celebrate this day the fire and light and truth
brought by faith and education into our world.

Music: © Leonard Barlotti arr Jan Harrington and Guy Jansen
Refrain: Tell my people I love them, tell my people I care; when they feel far away from me, tell my people I am there. Tell my people I came and died to give them liberty; as they abide in me they will be really free. Refrain
Tell my people where'er they go to claim my risen power; My peace and joy and love is for them hour by hour. Refrain
Tell my people to share their wealth and fight the sin of greed,
care for the refugee, the hungry they’re to feed. Refrain
Tell my people throughout the world to strive for peace today,
show love for enemies, be servants of the Way. Refrain

PRAYER and JESUS PRAYER Jim Cotter paraphrase
Eternal Spirit, Life-Giver, Pain-Bearer, Love-Maker,
Source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all, loving God, in whom is heaven:
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In the times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From, trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For your reign in the glory of the power that is love,
now and for ever. AMEN

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions
and have fun together. We bless you. Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE
Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying “Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!
THE WORD IN TEXTS
Hebrew Bible Genesis 1: 1-9
Read by QMC Principal Jayne Ann Young
Epistle Act 2: 1-21
Read by QMC Head Prefect Lucy Poole
Gospel John 14: 8-17
Read by QMC Board member Jane Ball
Contemporary reading “Queen Margaret of Scotland”
Read by QMC Chaplain Deborah Wilson
Born over a thousand years ago, Margaret and her family fled to Scotland, when their own land was invaded. There they became refugees, protected by King Malcolm the third. Malcolm fell in love with Margaret and asked her to marry him. At first, Margaret refused because she wanted to be a nun. Then she realised she could serve God, still marry Malcolm and serve her country as well. They married and parented six sons and two daughters.
Margaret was a strong woman, leading the country with her husband. She was known as a fair queen. She set up schools. She built hospitals. She helped people who wanted to go on pilgrimages by starting a ferry service across the sea to St Andrews in Fife.
Her favourite possession was a book of stories from the Gospels, which some say was given to her by her husband. This very book has survived and can be seen today in the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
Under Margaret, Scotland was no longer an uncivilized backwater, but a modern, European, religiously orthodox country ruled by a powerful royal couple.
RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks
SCHOOL SONG ‘Girls of Queen Margaret’
Led by the Cherubim Choir (Junior School Choir, Queen Margaret College).
Girls of Queen Margaret sing of our College
Faith in her future and pride in her past.
We of the present now pledge her our service,
Eager and resolute whatever be the task;
Proud of her name with its noble tradition –
Margaret of Scotland, the wise and the good –
May we her daughters, bear it with honour
Upholding the fame which for centuries has stood.
God keep us all when far we are scattered.
Lost to the paths and the friendship of youth;
Though we must follow the beckoning future,
May we be led by the Light of Truth.
May we be steadfast to seek and to follow –
Heedless of censure and careless of praise –
Fullness of knowledge, perfection of wisdom,
True understanding at end of our days

REFLECTION ‘Light and Truth with the Fire of Love’ Susan Jones
HYMN Ch 4 593 ‘She sits like a bird brooding on the waters’
Words and music © John Bell Wild Goose Publications
She sits like a bird, brooding on the waters, Hovering on the chaos of the world’s first day; She sighs and she sings, mothering creation, Waiting to give birth to all the Word will say.
She wings over earth, resting where she wishes, Lighting close at hand or soaring through the skies; She nests in the womb, welcoming each wonder, Nourishing potential hidden to our eyes.
She dances in fire, startling her spectators, Waking tongues of ecstasy where dumbness reigned; She weans and inspires all whose hearts are open, Nor can she be captured, silenced or restrained.
For she is the Spirit, one with God in essence, Gifted by the Saviour in eternal love; She is the key opening the scriptures, Enemy of apathy and heavenly dove

We think today of the people of Palestine and the Christian World Service Partner the Middle East Council of Churches and their work in Palestine focusing on income generation, water access, vocational training, community participation and health services. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Willow-Jean Prime and Maureen Pugh list MPs. Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Waimarino Presbyterian Parish, Taihape.
PRAYER FOR QUEEN MARGARET COLLEGE Deborah Wilson
(90th Jubilee Prayer)
Loving God, Creator of earth and Source of Life
Bless Queen Margaret College
May our School be a place where it is good
To teach and learn, to make friends and celebrate life
Where your light guides our path in the search for truth.
And your good news is told and lived each day
A sacred space
May our School be a place where each person is listened to
And your image in each one is valued
Where we encourage one another
And, when things go wrong, forgive one another
A community of compassion.
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S led by Lynne Dovey
Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity with all who follow Christ,
and a new spirit of love towards all people.
Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place where honest dealing,
good government, the desire for beauty
and the care for others flourish.
Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,
and what we believe,
the strong impulse of our worship and work.
AMEN.
HYMN ‘And did those feet in former times’
Words: © Susan Jones 2000: this version 2014 Tune: CH 4 #106 Jerusalem
And did those feet in former times
walk upon scree and tussock brown
and did the man, Jesus the Christ
cross mountains high and rolling downs?
and did he know the morning mist?
and did he know the harbour’s sheen?
and did he love this cityscape
its terraced streets, the urban scene?
And does he still walk this our land,
talking and laughing with us yet?
And does he know that stab of need
when all our other friends forget?
And is he there when wine is poured?
And is he there when bread’s prepared?
And does he laugh when life’s alright?
And does he weep when it is not?
Be with us Christ, as we step out.
Come with us on our lifelong quest.
Be our true guide, on our right hand,
be with us, walking and at rest.
So we will know life to the full,
be there to see us through the night.
For we would be your followers
pursue your Way with all our might.
PRAYER FOR LIGHT FOR THE WAY (said standing)
Light of truth, light of truth
Help us follow the light of truth
Word of light, lamp of Christ
Keep us following in your light
BLESSING AND SUNG AMEN
As we go forth from this place,
may it be that we are blessed with
the strength of a superhero as she fights for good,
the wisdom of a judge as she discerns the truth,
the light of love as within the heart of ordinary women,
so more will know that Love surrounds them
every moment of every day.
