WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE
This service is being taken by some members of the
2020 Commemoration Committee
GATHERING Lois Robertson
We gather today to remember
our foremothers and -fathers, members past and present.
This is also the day when we remember Saint Andrew
who is the patron Saint of our church and Scotland.
We honour these people
who through faith have sought sustenance, guidance and protection
So do we, for ourselves and all who come into St Andrews Church.
Let us celebrate life, in the presence that we call God.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN ‘Thy hand, O God has guided’
Words: Edward Plumptre (1821-1891)
Tune: 268 Thornbury WOV 389 2 verses
This is the hymn sung at the first service on Petone Beach.
1. Thy hand, O God, has guided
Thy flock from age to age;
the wondrous tale is written
full clear on every page;
our fathers owned Thy goodness,
and we their deeds record;
and both of this bear witness,
one Church, one Faith, one Lord.
2. Thy heralds brought glad tidings
to greatest, as to least;
they bade men rise and hasten
to share the great King’s feast;
And this was all their teaching,
in every deed and word,
to all alike proclaiming,
one Church, one Faith, one Lord.
one church, one faith, one Lord.
WELCOME
Kia ora tatou.
Kia ora.
PRAYER
On this day, we remember what this church means to us
and all the people who have passed through this parish
for their energy, commitment and faith.
May the stories today, inspire us as we live out our faith in this place.
JESUS’ PRAYER Jim Cotter paraphrase
Eternal Spirit
Life-Giver, Pain-Bearer, Love-Maker,
source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,
loving God, in whom is heaven:
the hallowing of your name
echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed
by the peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done
by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test,
strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory
of the power that is love, now and for ever.
Amen.

HYMN AA 155 ‘Where Mountains Rise’
Words © 1971, Shirley Erena Murray
Music by Vernon Griffiths © 1971 Faber Music Ltd. 5 verses
1. Where mountains rise to open skies
your name, O God, is echoed far,
from island beach to kauri’s reach,
in water’s light, in lake and star.
2. Your people’s heart, your people’s part
be in our caring for this land,
for faith to flower, for aroha*
to let each other’s mana** stand.
3. From broken word, from conflict stirred,
from lack of vision, set us free
to see the line of your design,
to feel creation’s energy.
4. Your love be known, compassion shown,
that every child have equal scope:
in justice done, in trust begun
shall be our heritage and hope.
5. Where mountains rise to open skies
your way of peace distil the air,
your spirit bind all humankind,
one covenant of life to share!
* aroha = Māori for “all-embracing love”
** mana = Māori for “dignity, prestige”
OFFERING:
OFFERING PRAYER
We bring these gifts of money so that this church may continue
to make the way of Jesus known.
We bring these gifts of food for those who need it.
May we offer ourselves again as our past members did,
seeking to walk the way of truth, light and love.
Amen
We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing
their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.
LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANDREW’S
People share notices and visitors are welcomed. If you have a notice, please move to the front row, ready to speak briefly from the lectern.
For the benefit of newcomers, please introduce yourself before you begin.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Norman Wilkins
CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Chad and the organisations working for justice and development in Chad. We remember the detainees of Manus and Nauru Islands, yearning that their cases be resolved. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Brooke van Velden and Ayesha Verrall, list MPs. Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Knox Presbyterian Church, Lower Hutt.
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S
Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity
with all who follow the Way of Jesus
and new bonds of love
with people of other faiths.
Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place
where honest dealing,
good government,
the desire for beauty,
and the care for others flourish.
Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,
and what we believe
the strong impulse
of our worship and work.
Amen
HYMN ‘In this place where now we gather’
Words © 2014 Fiona McDougal
Music © 2013 Vivien Chiu, used by permission
1. In this place where now we gather,
we have lived our common life.
In this place we’ve learned together,
moving through both joy and strife.
In this place hope’s grown within us
as we shared the bread and wine.
In this place where all are welcome,
we have known a love that shines.
2. From a past that saw the old folks
travelling from lands afar;
from a past that brought mixed blessings
to tangata whenua.
From a past of change and challenge,
synthesising new ideas;
from a past that brought rich stories,
giving strength to face old fears.
3. In this time of fresh beginnings,
opening our hearts with hope.
In this time of great adventure,
seeking out God’s greater scope.
In this time we stand together,
reaching to our world anew.
In this time we make commitment
to this city’s greater good.
4. Let us join in celebration
making joyful harmony.
Let us join our hands and promise
to treat earth respectfully.
Let us join and share our vision
of a world that’s just and free.
Let us join in deep intention
to live gently, lovingly.
SUNG BLESSING
May the God of new beginnings start with you and me.
May the God of new continuing story speak to you and me.
May the God of infinite wisdom shine on you and me.
May the God of safe homecomings welcome you and me. AMEN
