WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

PRELUDE Zum Frieden
(J.S. Bach)
CALL TO WORSHIP
Christians from early days found Christ in showing hospitality…
So we too welcome all.
The Celts of old gathered round hearths
to share stories, eat and drink , and keep warm…..
Māori have their rituals of welcome and hospitality….
So we also gather together.
People of all lands and times join in circles of community.
So we make a circle today,
to create a place of openness and listening;
to see with new eyes;
to make space for encounter;
and to catch a glimpse of God.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN WOV 637 ‘Jesus stand among us’
Words and music © 1977 Graham Kendrick Thankyou Music
(Admin. by SHOUT! Music Publishing Australia) 2 verses

1. Jesus stand among us at the meeting of our lives;
Be the full agreement in the meeting of our eyes.
O Jesus we love you and so we gather here;
Join our hearts in unity and take way our fear.

2. As to you we gather, from so many different lands,
Christ the life between us in the joining of our hands.
O Jesus we love you and so we gather here;
Join our hearts in unity and take way all fear.
GATHERING
We come to re-weave the unravelling fabric of community;
to reconnect once more to the larger human family;
to find once more that place of calm;
to remind ourselves that we belong;
and to remember what it is that we belong to.
Let us celebrate life in the presence we name God.
WELCOME
E te whānau a Te Karaiti
ngā mihi aroha ki a tātou katoa.
Kia ora tātou.
Talofa lava,
Talofa

PRAYER
JESUS’ PRAYER Jim Cotter paraphrase

Eternal Spirit
Life-Giver, Pain-Bearer, Love-Maker,
source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,
loving God, in whom is heaven:
the hallowing of your name
echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed
by the peoples of the world!
Your heavenly will be done
by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test,
strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory
of the power that is love, now and for ever.
Amen.
LIGHTING THE RAINBOW CANDLE
The rainbow candle represents the inclusive nature of our church where all are welcome and also celebrates our children.

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room to hear stories, ask questions
and have fun together.
We bless you. Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE
Traditionally we shake hands to pass the peace and say “peace be with you.” Now that COVID-19 is here we ask that you pass the peace without shaking hands.

THE WORD IN TEXTS Rosemary Lawrence
Hebrew Bible 1 Kings 19:1-15a
Gospel/New Testament Luke 8.26-39
Contemporary reading “More than tolerance” (pg 76-77)
By John W H Smith and Rex A E Hunt
Coming to a place of candour
where beliefs and creeds confer;
we will not react with anger,
nor tell others where they err.
Can we speak of faith and doctrine?
Can we listen – really hear?
As we meet can we imagine
that new insights may appear?

When we hear some different teaching,
when we try to understand,
different faiths can be disturbing,
and can question where we stand;
we need not forsake devotion,
if it’s God whom we adore;
but we can share inspiration;
we can question and explore.

We can pledge to be accepting;
put behind us lack of trust;
we can practice understanding:
shun rebuke that is unjust.
If we can affirm each other,
be as friend and not as foe,
we can meet and share together;
plant respect and let it grow.
RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks.

Tune Stuttgart, 5 verses
1. Lord, you sometimes speak in wonders,
unmistakable and clear,
mighty signs to prove your presence,
overcoming doubt and fear.

2. Lord, you sometimes speak in whispers,
still and small and scarcely heard;
only those who want to listen
catch the all-important word.

3. Lord, you sometimes speak in silence,
through our loud and noisy day;
we can know and trust you better
when we quietly wait and pray.

4. Lord, you love to speak in Scripture,
words that summon from the page,
shown and taught us by your Spirit
with fresh light for every age.

5. Lord, you always speak in Jesus,
always new yet still the same:
teach us now more of our Saviour,
make our lives display his Name.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Faithful God, you ask us to be faithful people.
In this community, you ask us to be people of justice.

in large ways and in small ways
so your eternal community may come in every way.
