WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE
Today’s service is led by Ellen Murray
GATHERING
We gather in this place of welcome
Our presence together makes this space sacred
We gather for a time of reflection
May we be more aware of the presence of the sacred
We gather and reaffirm the impulse of the sacred towards justice and peace
Let us celebrate life in the presence we name God.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN AA 36 ‘Every Day I will offer you’
Words © 1992 Shirley Murray
Music by Colin Gibson, © 1993 Hope Publishing Company (Vs x 3)
- Every day I will offer you,
loving God, my heart and mind,
every way I discover you
in the work your hand has signed;
help me see I’m your image, and
you have dreamed what I might be ‑
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!
- Every day I will look to Christ,
and give thanks for wine and bread
through the pain and the emptiness
where your world cries to be fed;
help me see I can work for change
and wherever I might be
every day in your Spirit
I’ll find the love and energy!
- Every day I will take your word,
answer your compassion’s claim,
celebrate every sign of hope,
every deed done in your name;
help me see you are always there,
and your light can shine through me,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together.
We bless you. Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE
Traditionally we shake hands to pass the peace and say “peace be with you”. Now that COVID-19 is here
we ask that you pass the peace without shaking hands.
THE WORD IN TEXTS Wendy Matthews
Contemporary Psalm ‘The Hidden’
by Joy Cowley’
Everything has its roots in God.
In the greening of the tree,
the music of falling water,
the surge of the incoming tide,
the rise and fall of seaweed,
the barking of seals on a rock,
the dive of the humpback whale,
the I AM is manifest.
Everything is contained in God.
In the smoke from a driftwood fire,
the wind sharpening leaves of flax,
the shadow of trout in a moonlit stream,
the first fall of snow on the mountain,
the kingfisher flying to her nest,
The I AM is moving.
Everything speaks of God.
In the winner’s shout of celebration,
the laughter round the dinner table,
the child’s cry of pain in the night,
the groan of the man’s last breath,
the I AM is heard.
Gospel Mark 4:26-34
RESPONSE
For the Word that was in the beginning,
for the Word reborn in our hearts,
for the Word embodied in us:
we give thanks.
REFLECTION ‘Noticing the reign of God among us’ Ellen Murray
A TIME OF SILENCE
AFFIRMATION OF THE JOURNEY S Greg-Schroeder
Come along with me as a sojourner in faith.
Bring along a sense of expectancy
a sense of high hopes
a glimpse of future possibility
a vivid imagination.
For God's creation is not done.
We are called to venture forth toward a future yet unnamed.
As we venture forward
we leave behind our desires for
a no-risk life,
worldly accumulations,
certainty of answers.
Let us travel light in the spirit of faith and expectation
toward the God of our hopes and dreams.
Let us be a witness to God's future breaking in.
Come along with me as a sojourner in faith
secure in the knowledge
that we never travel alone.
INTRODUCTION TO A HYMN FROM THE TRADITION
HYMN WOV 80 ‘Immortal, invisible, God only wise’
Words: Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) alt.
Music: St Denio Public domain WOV 80
1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above,
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
3. To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree,
and wither and perish: but nought changeth thee.
4. Creator of glory, creator of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
of all thy rich graces this grace, God, impart –
take the veil from our faces, the veil from our heart.
5. All praise we would render: O help us to see,
‘tis only the splendour of light hideth thee;
and so let thy glory, Almighty, impart
through Christ in the story, thy Christ to the heart.
OFFERING
OFFERING HYMN AA 127 ‘Take my gifts’ v1
Words © 1992 Shirley Erena Murray, (Admin. by Hope Publishing Company)
Music: ©1992 Colin Gibson Hope Publishing Company
Take my gifts and let me love you,
God who first of all loved me,
gave me light and food and shelter,
gave me life and set me free.
Now because your love has touched me,
I have love to give away,
now the bread of love is rising,
loaves of love to multiply!
We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing
their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.
OFFERING PRAYER
LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANDREW’S
People share notices and visitors are welcomed. If you have a notice not already in the order of service, please move to the front row, ready to speak briefly from the lectern.
For the benefit of newcomers, please introduce yourself before you begin.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lynne Dovey
CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Guatemala and Belize and indigenous communities working towards self-determination. We hold all refugees in our hearts. We pray in particular for those detained for many years in Papua New Guinea & Nauru. We give thanks for progress that has been made and pray that their calls for justice might yet find a compassionate response. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Dr Elizabeth Kerekere and Melissa Lee, list MPs. Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Waimarino Presbyterian Parish, Taihape.
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S
Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity
with all who follow the Way of Jesus
and new bonds of love
with people of other faiths.
Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place
where honest dealing,
good government,
the desire for beauty,
and the care for others flourish.
Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,
and what we believe
the strong impulse
of our worship and work.
Amen
HYMN ‘Within our lives’
Words: © Helen Wiltshire: verses 1-4 © 2011 Pilgrim Publishing
Music: O Waly Waly Public Domain WOV 453
1. Within our lives are seams of gold,
talents to stir; gifts to unfold.
Within our lives, the sacred gives
a call to life we've yet to live.
2. Within our hearts are joys to share,
deep love to give and gentle care;
the gift of grace forgiveness makes:
within our hearts, the sacred wakes.
3. Within our minds are words that live,
reflections wise with hope to give,
and embers stirred, a fire that glows:
within our minds, the sacred grows.
4. Within our souls are myst'ries deep,
joys given life and hopes that leap,
visions newborn and given wings:
within our souls, the sacred sings.
