WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Aware of the passing seasons of our lives,
we come seeking connection with something deeper.
For the beauty of falling leaves and clear blue skies after drenching rain,
we give thanks.
In the poignancy and depths of this autumn time,
we remember with tenderness all we have been given.
SILENCE
GATHERING
Mothering God, you gave us birth in the bright morning of this world.
Creator, source of every breath, you are our rain, our wind, our sun.
Mothering Christ, you took our form, offering us your food of light,
grain of life, and grape of love, your very body for our peace.
Mothering Spirit, nurturing one, in arms of patience hold us close, so that in faith we root and grow until we flow’r, until we know.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN WOV 80 ‘Immortal Invisible God Only Wise’
Words: Walter Chalmers Smith 1824-1908 Music Welsh Melody 4 verses

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

3. To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish but naught changeth thee.

4. Great Creator of glory, pure Creator of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render, O help us to see
’tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.
WELCOME
E te whānau a Te Karaiti
ngā mihi aroha ki a tātou katoa.
Kia ora tātou.

Talofa lava
Talofa.

PRAYER OF APPROACH Kathy Galloway (adapted)
Source of Life and Love we name God,
in you we live and move and have our being.
Jesus, Companion and Liberator,
with you we walk the way of love.
Empowering and Imaginative Spirit,
through you we are made one.

God, trinity of love, we seek you in the dance of life.
We embrace your love.
We would dance.
This is the meaning of the resurrection,
that we can dance.
Alleluia. Amen.

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room to hear stories, ask questions
and have fun together.
We bless you. Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE
Traditionally we shake hands to pass the peace and say “peace be with you.” Now that COVID-19 is here we ask that you pass the peace without shaking hands.

THE WORD IN TEXTS Marilyn Wallace
Hebrew Bible Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
Gospel/New Testament John 16:12-15
Contemporary reading ‘Who is the Trinity?’
By Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179
You are music.
You are life.
Source of everything,
creator of everything,
angelic hosts sing your praise.
Wonderfully radiant,
deep,
mysterious.
You are alive in everything,
and yet you are unknown to us.
RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks.

Words: ©2008 Jann Aldredge-Clanton, Eaken Press

1. Wisdom, Sophia, joins in our labour;
she with us freely co-creates life;
on this adventure, loving our neighbours,
kindness we nurture, ending the strife.

2. Wisdom, Sophia, shares in our sorrows,
joining us freely, feeling our pain,
caring, caressing, now and tomorrow,
giving us blessing, hope to regain.

3. Wisdom, Sophia, gives us new power,
helping to free us, bringing us peace;
she with us healing that we may flower,
beauty revealing, talents released.

4. She is transforming, Wisdom, Sophia,
daily reforming, giving new birth;
changing and growing, she with us freeing,
touching and flowing, nourishing earth.

REFLECTION ‘Wisdom’s Call’ Rev. Dr Fei Taule’ale’ausumai

HYMN CH4 528 ‘Make Me a Channel of Your Peace’
Words: Prayer of St Francis, Music Sebastian Temple arr. B J Pulkingham, Public Domain

1. Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury your pardon;
and where there's doubt true faith in you.

Oh master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

2. Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, only light;
and where there's sadness, ever joy.

Oh master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

3. Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving to all that we receive,
and in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Oh master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

4. Make me a channel of your peace
Where there’s despair in life let me bring hope
Where there is darkness only light
And where there’s sadness every joy.

OFFERING SONG
Take my gifts and let me love you,
God who first of all loved me,
gave me light and food and shelter,
gave me life and set me free.
OFFERING PRAYER
For the Spirit of God in our lives,
for the uplifting power of a loving presence
in the world – seen and unseen –
we give thanks.
We bring our gifts
of money, food, music and reflection
in that same spirit of generosity and love. Amen

We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.
LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY OF ST ANDREW’S

For the benefit of newcomers, please introduce yourself before you begin.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Tony Kirby

CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Romania and Moldova and the Reformed Church in Romania. We hold all refugees in our hearts. We pray in particular for those detained for many years in Papua New Guinea & Nauru. We give thanks for progress that has been made and pray that their calls for justice might yet find a compassionate response. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Hon Meka Whaitiri (Ikaroa-Rāwhiti), Arena Williams (Manurewa). Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Marton.
PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S
Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity
with all who follow the Way of Jesus
and new bonds of love
with people of other faiths.

Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place
where honest dealing,
good government,
the desire for beauty,
and the care for others flourish.

Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,
and what we believe
the strong impulse
of our worship and work.
Amen
HYMN WOV 328 ‘Filled With The Spirit’s Power’ (adapted)
Tune: Woodlonds
1. Filled with the Spirit’s power, with one accord,
the infant church confessed its risen Lord:
O Holy Spirit, in the church today,
no less your power of friendship now display.

2. Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire,
that unity may be our great desire:
give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call,
and readiness in each to work for all.

3. Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace
in your strong care the people of each race:
like wind and fire with life among us move
till we are known as Christ’s and Christians prove.

SENDING OUT
Our time together is nearly over,
our worship draws to an end.
We pause for a moment to remember
any image, any word, any inspiration
that touched us…….
Drawing strength from that moment
and our time together,
we turn again to the outside world
and sing this blessing, for ourselves and to each other…..
SUNG AMEN
