Hello everyone,
The last week has seen the departure of three significant social activists from our communal life in New Zealand.
Jacinda Ardern resigned as Prime Minister after leading New Zealand with grace and good humour through disaster, pandemic and economic turmoil since 2017. In her last speech as Prime Minister at Ratana, she thanked New Zealanders for their love and empathy and the privilege of serving our country.
Kuia and Maori activist, Titewhai Harawira died on Wednesday, aged 90. Controversial and outspoken, she was a political commentator and a civil rights activist for over 50 years. She campaigned fiercely for Te Reo Maori and the improvement of Maori housing and often accompanied Prime Ministers onto Te Tii marae on Waitangi Day.
We heard confirmation too this week, of the death of Andrew Bagshaw, scientific researcher and humanitarian aid worker in Ukraine. His parents spoke with dignity about his fearlessness and determination, his ability to think deeply and take action for the underdog.
All were great activists in their own very different ways. It is good to pause and give thanks for their energy and commitment but also to ponder what motivated and sustained them in their work.
On Sunday we will explore some ideas about how we could support our own interactions with a complex world, drawing on the rich depths of our Christian tradition.
All the best,
Fiona
