I am writing from my bed this morning with shortness of breath, fever, and terrible cough. The effects of having Covid-19 two weeks ago still haven’t gone away. I had the privilege of leading opening prayers and devotion at the Pacific Graduation for Victoria University on Monday night. There were 450 people present for a sit-down meal with a live band and 67 graduands. Many parents travelled from their Pacific islands to join their children. The night was full of entertainment, speeches, and feasting. In all my years of attending graduations, this was the most extravagant, colourful, and fun of them all.
Well, here we are at the 3rd week of Advent representing “Joy”. What brings us joy in this day and age? Being with children and grandchildren, family and friends are times of great joy. Watching children graduate, having grand-babies, seeing them reach their milestones. I know for me, I am missing all the great nieces and nephews in my life who are all up in Auckland and in Australia, they bring me much joy especially when I am with them. I am going to Auckland next Saturday for the day for my great nephew , Hosea’s 1st birthday and he, along with his 2 year old sister Viola, will also be christened at the birthday party as it is being held at their home church. I’m looking forward to that and hope my health improves by then.
Christmas time is a time for much Joy. Everyone rushing around to buy thoughtful presents for one another and those who don’t have the money to buy think of alternatives that are just as special and thoughtful. But Jesus the baby of Christmas time is the greatest joy for us as we celebrate the Saviour of the world being born among us, come to bring new life of hope and love into our midst.
Can you believe it’s been 9 months since I began here at SAOTT. In this time, we have sadly had 7 funerals, some of which I have led, alongside colleagues. I have sold and bought a house and moved two times. I have been to Samoa with the Prime minister, South Korea for the International Women’s Roundtable, Fiji for 1 week’s holiday and had Covid-19. It has been full-on and has been a great time of getting to know everyone individually. I would like the opportunity to get to visit as many of you as possible in your homes next year but would prefer to be invited by you when you are available. So, I look forward to receiving invitations in the new year to come and visit you.
I am delighted to let you know that on Wednesday evening Parish Council voted to appoint Sue Hirst as the new Parish Council Convenor. Sue has been Deputy Convenor for a couple of years and is well familiar with Parish Council responsibilities. I am sure everyone will welcome her appointment and support her in the role.
I’m looking forward to seeing how SAOTT celebrates Christmas over the next couple of weeks and hope you will be able to join us if you are in Wellington. Blessings on your week. Fei
