Join us for a beautiful programme of Mozart – Sonata No. 18 in D major K. 576S, Scriabin – Sonata No. 5 op. 53 and Medtner – Sonata-Ballade in F# major op. 27.

William Berry is a 20-year-old pianist from Lower Hutt. He was previously taught by Elizabeth Marrison, Ludwig Treviranus and Gillian Bibby. He obtained a degree in piano performance from Victoria University under Dr Jian Liu. He has succeeded in many local and national competitions, winning the 2023 IRMT Wellington Sonata Celebration and was a semi-finalist in the 2022 National ConcertoCompetition and 2022 Lewis Eady National Piano Competition. William won the 2023 NZSM concerto competition which gave him the opportunity to perform Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 with orchestra. He was sponsored by Professor Jack C Richards to attend the Semaine Internationale de Piano in Switzerland in 2022, where he was selected to perform as a young artist in 2023. He has played in masterclasses for Boris Berman, Edith Fischer, James Giles and Joyce Yang. William finished his second year of law at VUW this year. Later this month, he will go to Auckland to compete as a semi-finalist in the 2024 Lewis Eady National Piano Competition.
