GATHERING
Your tears are for my brokenness;
Your tears are for my marring;
Your tears are for my healing.
May my tears join with yours,
And may that flow
Become a healing balm –
For my life
And for the life of your world.
Through the silences –
Speak to me:
In the blowing of the wind;
In the rustling of the grass;
In the sound of the sea;
In the beating of my heart;
In the stirring of my spirit –
Speak, I am listening.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN: WOV 261 ‘Were you there’
Negro Spiritual
arr. Francis Brotherton Westbrook
1. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
O sometimes is causes me
to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
2. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
O sometimes it causes me
to tremble, tremble , tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

OPENING WORDS
Along the road
I’ve travelled far,
I’ve been lost and found,
I’ve fallen and been raised.
My weary soul found rest
In some beautiful places,
In some wonderful people.
My soul wearies more easily now.
The ‘closed’ signs are going up,
And the road ahead is hard.
My soul finds rest
In God alone.
(Ian Cowie – paraphrase).
PRAYER
Dear God,
Give comfort and peace to those who are separated from loved ones.
May the ache in our hearts be the strengthening of our hearts.
May our longing bring resolve to our lives, conviction and purity to our
love.
Teach us to embrace our sadness lest it turn to despair.
Transform our yearning into wisdom.
Let our hearts grow fonder. Amen.

JESUS’ PRAYER
Eternal Spirit, Life-giver
Pain-bearer, Love-maker
source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,
loving God, in whom is heaven:
The hallowing of your name echo
through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed
by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace
and freedom come on earth!
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From trials to great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,
Now and forever. Amen.
Crucifixion
Reading: John 19:17-30 Anna Smith.
Symbols: Cross and Nails
A time of silence. Come forward with your prayer and place at the foot of the
cross, extinguish a candle as you leave the stage.
HYMN: CH 392 ‘When I survey the wondrous Cross’
Words: Isaac Watts, Music: Rockingham
1. When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
3. See from His head, His hands, His feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down;
did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4. Where every realm of nature mine,
my gift was still be far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
Reading: Mark 15: 42-47 Anna Smith.
Symbol: The crucifixion
A time of silence. Come forward with your prayer and place at the foot of the
cross, extinguish a candle as you leave the stage.
Hymn: WOV 255 ‘O sacred head sore wounded’
Words: Paul Gerhardt, Music: Passion Chorale.
1. O sacred head, sore wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down;
O kingly head surrounded
with thorns thine only crown.
Death’s pallor now comes o’er thee
the glow of life decays;
yet hosts of heaven adore thee
and tremble as they gaze.
2. What language shall I borrow
to praise thee, heavenly friend,
for this thy dying sorrow,
thy pity without end?
O agony and dying!
O love to sinners free!
Jesus, all grace supplying,
Turn thou they face on me.
3. In this thy bitter Passion,
good Shepherd, think of me
with thy most sweet compassion,
unworthy though I be:
beneath thy cross abiding
for ever would I rest,
in thy dear love confiding,
and with thy presence blest.
4. Be thou my consolidation,
my shield, when I must die;
remind me of thy passion
when my last hour draws nigh.
Mine eyes shall then behod thee,
upon thy cross shall dwell,
my heart by faith enfold thee;
who dieth thus, dies well.
SILENCE
Reflection: To be strong for whom? Fei
HYMN WOV 266 ‘There is a Green Hill far away’
1. There is a green hill far away,
outside a city wall,
where the dear Lord was crucified,
who died to save us all.
2. We may not know, we cannot tell,
what pains he had to bear,
but we believe it was for us
he hung and suffered there.
3. Oh, dearly, dearly has he loved!
and we must love him too,
and trust in his redeeming blood,
and try his works to do.
GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER Lynne Dovey
SENDING OUT
We go on our way
and Jesus goes ahead of us
We do not need to be afraid.
God is love
and love is more powerful
than fear or death or evil,
and we are greatly loved.
We go out into the world
in the power of the spirit of Christ
to walk through darkness and uncertainty
towards the joy of Easter Day.
We go in peace.
AROHANUI BLESSING AA 95 May the mystery of God enfold us
Words: Joy Cowley. Tune: Marlborough Sounds, Ian Render
1. May the mystery of God enfold us,
May the wisdom of God uphold us,
May the fragrance of God be around us,
May the brightness of God surround us.
2. May the wonder of God renew us,
May the loving of God flow through us,
May the peace of God deeply move us,
May the moving of God bring us peace.
