KARANGA—Call to worship

 

The Spirit of God has long dwelled in this land,

the Creating Spirit in our many peoples.

We gather to celebrate who we are,

who we come from, and who we are yet to be—

in bread and wine

in worship and shared meals

with kumara and puha or haggis and scotch.

 

We come with open hearts and listening ears

Inheritors of the Covenant

People of the Treaty and People of the Land.

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.
Kia ora.

After everyone is welcomed, we greet each other (in place of “passing the peace”.) You might like to put your hands together in the prayer position and bend the head towards the other person. This is a greeting practiced in many countries. A hand on the upper chest and bowing slightly to acknowledge the other person is also an option. Feel free to simply observe if you wish. Suggested greetings:

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou (Happy New Year)
Mā te Atua e manaaki (God bless)

We think today of the people of Lesser Antilles and the Presbyterian Church in Trinidad & Tobago. We remember the detainees of Manus and Nauru Islands, yearning that their cases be resolved. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Todd Muller (Bay of Plenty electorate) and Stuart Nash (Napier electorate). Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of St David’s Presbyterian Parish and the Church of the Province of Myanmar and from the worldwide church for the Church of the Province of Myanmar.

Renew your people, God,
and renew our life in this place.
Give us a new spirit of unity
with those of all faiths,
and a new spirit of love
towards all people.

Bless the city in which we live
that it may be a place where
honest dealing,
good government,
the desire for beauty,
and the care for others flourish.

Bless this church
that what we know of your will
may become what we do,

of our worship and work.
