WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

Sunday gathering led by Parish Council

GATHERING
Eternal Spirit,
because the world is full of beauty and
beauty is tender thing,
and we are keepers of creation:
we need to be won again and again
to your way of loving,
to your way of justice,
to hope and harmony. ( Adapted from “ Be Our Freedom Lord” edited by Terry C Falla)

He wairua te Atua
God is spirit

He marama te Atua
God is light

He aroha te Atua
God is love

PROCESSIONAL HYMN Dear God Embracing Humankind
Words: John G. Whittier, (1807 – 1892) -adapted
Tune: Repton WOV: 519ii
1. Dear God, embracing humankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
reclothe us in our rightful mind,
in purer lives your service find,
in deeper reverence praise,
in deeper reverence praise.

2. In simple trust like those who heard,
beside the Syrian sea,
the gracious calling of your Word,
let us, like them by Spirit stirred,
“Rise up and followers be,
rise up and followers be.”

3. Drop your still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease;
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let our ordered lives confess
the beauty of your peace,
the beauty of your peace.

4. Breathe through the pulses of desire
your coolness and your balm;
let sense be numb, let flesh retire;
speak through the earthquake, wind and fire
O still, small voice of calm,
O still, small voice of calm.

WELCOME
Kia ora tātou.
Kia ora.

SHARING THE PEACE
This morning we remain seated as we share the Peace of Christ with those beside us, using the words below. When we offer welcome, peace, and healing to others, may we be open to healing and transformation for ourselves and for our world.

Peace be with you. And also with you.

JESUS’ PRAYER © Revd Sherri Weinberg
God - heart of the world:
revealed through every aspect of creation:
understood through our awareness.
May we honour the holiness of creation and act accordingly
so that your love is reflected in the way we live.
May we always be thankful for the food we eat
and the friends we have.
May we forgive those who transgress against us
and be forgiven for our own.
In the freedom of love may we live as your heartbeat
and not be compromised by hesitation.
Through our freedom, may your justice
be seen and heard and experienced
forever and ever.
Amen.

THE WORD IN TEXTS Lois Robertson

Responsive Psalm Psalm 29: 1-4, 7-11
The Voice of the Lord in a Storm
All of you angels in heaven, honour the glory and power of the Lord.
Honour the wonderful name of the Lord and worship the Lord most holy and glorious.
The voice of the Lord echoes over the oceans.
The glorious Lord God thunders above the roar of the raging sea,
and his voice is mighty and marvellous.
The voice of the LORD destroys the cedar trees.
The voice of the Lord makes lightning flash and the desert tremble.
And because of the Lord the desert near Kadesh shivers and shakes.
The voice of the Lord makes deer give birth before their time.
Forests are stripped of leaves, and the temple is filled with shouts of praise.
The Lord rules on his throne, king of the flood forever.
Pray that our Lord will make us strong and give us peace.

Gospel Mark 4:35-41

• Let us take time to stand in awe of this self-evolving universe.
• Let us marvel at the living eco-sphere of this planet.
• Let us set a supreme value on all forms of life.
• Let us develop a lifestyle that pres erves the balance of the planetary eco- system.
• Let us refrain from all activities that endanger the future of any species.
• Let us devote ourselves to maximising the future for all living creatures.
• Let us set the needs of the coming global society before those of ourselves, our tribe, society or nation.
• Let us learn to value the human relationships that bind us together into social groups.
• Let us learn to appreciate the total cultural legacy we have received from the past.
• Let us accept in a self-sacrificing fashion the responsibility now laid on us all for the future of our species and all planetary life.

RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks.

HYMN “I am Your Mother” (Earth Prayer)
Words and Music: © 1996 Hope Publishing Company
Words: Shirley Erena Murray Tune: Bunessan

1. I am your mother: do not neglect me!
Children, protect me - I need your trust;
my breath is your breath,
my death is your death,
ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

2. I am your nurture: do not destroy me!
Love and enjoy me, savour my fruit;
my good is your good,
my food is your food,
water and flower, branches and root.
3. I am your lodging: do not abuse me!
Tenderly use me, soothing my scars
my health is your health,
my wealth is your wealth,
Shining with promise, set among stars.

4. God is our maker : do not deny God,
Challenge, defy God, threaten this place:
life is to cherish –
care, or we perish!
I am your mother, tears on my face. . . .

OFFERING PRAYER (said together) Francis McNab – adapted
We give thanks for life and the courage we are given to live it
We give thanks for this world and the beauty within it
We give thanks for what we have and what we can do with it
Let our gratitude for life be expressed in our generosity
Let our hope be expressed in our care for this planet
Let our faith be lived out as we share this world with others
Amen

We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Catriona Cairns

CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Singapore and the National Council of Churches of Singapore. We remember the detainees on Manus and Nauru Islands yearning for their cases to be resolved. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Rino Tirikatene (Te Tai Tonga electorate) and Anne Tolley, (East Coast electorate). Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of St Matthew's Co-operating Parish, Brooklyn.

HYMN ‘Climate in Our Hands’
Words: © George Stuart Tune: Russia WOV 89

1. This wondrous universe tells of God’s glory,
endless in space and forever in time.
We are astonished when we contemplate its story.
We have a place in this myst’ry sublime.
2. This planet’s destiny, life in its beauty
rests with the choices we make every day.
We have the burden, we have the solemn duty
to guard tomorrow, so children can play.
3. Consuming energy, burning resources -
climate is changing and sea levels rise.
Deserts expanding, more weather’s fiercest forces -
this is our fate, it should be no surprise.
4. Changes to industry and to our life-style,
can welcome nature to heal and repair.
Living again in the bountiful and fertile,
God is again to be found everywhere.
