WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE
Sunday Gathering led by Susan Jones
GATHERING
We join in familiarity and community
We welcome visitors and new associations
Today we begin the month which celebrates ‘Pride’ and ‘Festival’
We join this celebration of being human and being free
May this freedom be available for all orientations, races and people
May friendship amongst those who are different, be our goal,
in the same way Jesus befriended all
PROCESSIONAL HYMN AA 72 ‘In this familiar place’
Words & Music by Colin Gibson
Words & Music: © 1994 Hope Publishing Co.
In this familiar place
I know the mystery of your grace.
Refrain: For the love that I receive, for the truth that I believe,
I praise and thank you; for this here and now.
In halting song and word
the music of your voice is heard. Refrain
Among these friends of mine
I taste the company divine. Refrain
Within this narrow sphere
I learn that you are everywhere. Refrain
WELCOME
Kia ora tatou.
Kia ora.

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together.
We bless you. Amen.
PASSING THE PEACE
Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying ‘Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!
THE WORD IN TEXTS Roger Jones
Gospel Luke 9: 28-36
Contemporary reading A reflection on Don Borrie by Robert Reid
…Don was a significant influence on scores of students who passed through university in the late 1960s and 1970s. As General Secretary of the Student Christian Movement he confronted us relatively privileged students with the injustices of the time; the Vietnam War, apartheid, Korea and to confront the white institutional racism in Aotearoa that we Pakeha all benefit from.
For Don the Christ of the gospels was the revolutionary, the liberator. Although a number of us moved on to embrace more recent revolutionaries and liberators this was not a rejection of what we had discovered with Don's help, rather a continuation of a thirst for justice and love that can never be extinguished and continues to drive many of us in the work we do and the lives we lead.
RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks

HYMN ‘Hope Springs Anew’

Hope springs anew throughout the earth
as Holy Wisdom brings new birth.
She guides us on Her paths of peace,
that loving kindness will increase.
Love rises up to end the strife,
As Holy Wisdom brings new life.
She gives us grace to welcome all,
To take down each dividing wall.
Peace flows within us every day,
As Holy Wisdom shows the way.
She blesses those who hold her fast,
That we may all be free at last.
Joy blossoms freely through each land,
When touched by Wisdom’s tender hand.
She leads to sacred healing springs,
As all creation claps and sings.
OFFERING PRAYER
We bring in faith and love, these gifts of money and food.
We also bring ourselves, freely offering what is needed
in the continued work towards freedom and justice and peace.
May all gifts be given and received with joy.
So may it be.
AMEN
We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing
their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.

For the benefit of newcomers, please introduce yourself before you begin.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Sandra Kirby
CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of Mexico and the Methodist Church in Mexico. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Andrew Little and Jan Logie, List MPs. Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Okato Cooperating Church.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
St Andrew’s is an open community. All are invited to Christ’s table. Wherever you are on your faith journey, wherever you have come from and wherever you are going to, whatever you believe, whatever you do not believe, you are welcome to participate in the communion. This is God’s meal for all people.
COMMUNION HYMN ‘This day we journey’
Words: © 2017 Susan Jones Music: Finlandia WOV 48
This day we journey with a much-loved friend
the days are long, the path beneath us wends
up hill and down to valleys deep and frightening
where night falls quickly, courage must be found.
The path unfolds, we walk with our companion
who knows the way, the place to where we’re bound.
Here on this path we need someone to feed us
the living bread which nourishes our soul
to give us wine which slakes our thirst and buoys us,
for each new day some trial may unfold.
At this broad table, gathered round together
we all are fed and blessed and so made bold.
This table round allows each one to gather,
there are no corners where we might get lost.
Each one is equal, each one loved, accepted
For each the cup, the space, the love, the host.
Gen’rous the sharing, all get more than crumbs
in all we’re given, we gain love the most.
COMMUNION LITURGY on card
Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come to the front of the church and receive the bread, or a gluten-free cracker, taking a piece large enough to dip into the wine (silver cup) or grape juice (pottery cup). Eat the bread dipped in wine or juice. At the centre of the servers is a gluten free plate.
Or, remain in your seat to be served if mobility is difficult. If you don't wish to receive communion, also please remain in your seat – we’re glad you’re with us.
HYMN AA 85 ‘Let justice roll down’
Music and Words: Colin Gibson © 1994 Hope Publishing
Refrain:
Let justice roll down like a river,
let justice flow down to the sea;
let justice roll down like a river
let justice begin through me.
Justice for all who go hungry,
crying to God to be fed,
left in a world of abundance
to beg for a morsel of bread. Refrain
Justice for those who are homeless,
victims of war or of need,
trapped on the borders of nowhere,
lost in the canyons of greed. Refrain
Justice for all who are powerless,
yearning for freedom in vain,
plundered and robbed of their birth-right,
silently bearing their pain. Refrain
BLESSING
SUNG AMEN
