Hello everyone,
It is always sad when someone moves out of our lives and we feel with Ben Gray on the death of his father Vincent on Thursday morning of this week. We extend our thoughts and love to Ben and Lynne and their family as they arrange Vincent’s service here in the church next Thursday (2.30pm).
This is period with a couple of anniversaries also – yellow roses were brought last week to remember Rowena Somogyvary who died in 2017. It is around this time last year also that we were still shocked by news of Annemarie Treadwell’s death. We know so much more now than we knew then.
The Gender Identity Night on Tuesday 12 June went very well. It was a lovely atmosphere and people said they appreciate the combination of hearing stories, gaining more information and the number of resource groups who attended. A post has been put on the website with a recording of the evening. https://www.standrews.org.nz/category/social-justice/ A summary sheet with the details of resources will come shortly to those who left email addresses. Thank you to those who helped with the tea and coffee which was a lovely welcome for people as they came in out of the cold wet night. Also thank you to Peter Cowley for his work on the sound desk and providing the recording. Jillene and Laetitia were also very helpful with advertising.
The more I work through the series on Compassion this month, the more I realise my former impression of compassion has been of something soft and fuzzy (and therefore weak). In fact, at heart, compassion needs to be really tough in our world. Often, when profit is the bottom line or rules are paramount, compassion seems to offer the easy way out. But, compassion, as well as springing from our emotional depths, also requires great resolution, resolve and discernment. In a world where prejudice and intolerance can quickly gain the upper hand, compassion needs to be courageous and constant on the side of those who need a break. So may it be.
I hope you are all keeping warm and dry. On Sunday we look at how compassion fits with religion and vice versa. Fionnaigh McKenzie will report back in a Life Moment about her experiences making an oral submission at Parihaka recently. A good combination. See you there!

On 14 June 2018 peacefully at Bob Scott Petone aged 96 years.
Beloved husband of Mary for 69 years. Father and father in-law of Alex and Janine, Ben and Lynne, Pamela, Jo and partner David. Loved Grandfather of Daniel, Jonathan, Georgia and Thomas. Survived by his brother Douglas. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at both Malvina Major and Bob Scott Petone for looking after Vincent.
Friends are invited to celebrate Vincent’s life at 2.30pm on Thursday 21 June at St Andrew’s 30 The Terrace Wellington followed by refreshments.
